FourSquare

Mass mingling is set to be the next big thing in social networking. I guess it all just goes full circle, hm? From meet-ups to cyberspace hang out places and back to the meatspace. With all the mobile tech we’ve got at our disposal, it has become massively easy to update our status from practically anywhere. Because of that, we can easily tell all our friends where we are at all times, if ever we want to hang out.

foursquare

Now, of course you can do that through Twitter or Facebook, but Foursquare was designed specifically for mass mingling purposes. It’s really a lot like a game. There are these things called venues; and they are exactly what you think they are- they’re places. With each venue, you can add tips about what to do there. Like, for example, you have your favorite bar, you can say “order their fantastic margarita.” Now, everyone who checks out that venue will have an idea of what that place has to offer.

Users get points and eventually badges for checking into venues marked by his/her friends. There are a ton of things you can earn by checking into venues repeatedly. Let’s say that you and your friends love a certain watering hole somewhere down at Pasay Road. If you go there and check-in with your phone, you get points. If you go there the most, you become the mayor of that area. I’m sure it’ll get pretty fun and competitive soon.

The beauty of Foursquare is that it was really designed to be mobile. It has an iPhone, Android, Palm, webOS, BlackBerry, and Windows Mobile application versions.

With FourSquare, you can keep tabs on your stats, such as frequency of visiting a certain venue and things like that. The more points and stats you accumulate (the more you use it, basically), you unlock better status and more customization options.

Check out FourSquare here and add people up! It’ll be a blast!

Have you ever been to a blind date? Take everything you know about it, multiply it by millions of users, have everyone logged on to the Internet, and presto! Welcome to the world of Chat Roulette!

Chat Roulette is a new Internet phenomenon where you get to chat with random people. What makes Chat Roulette fun and exciting (and in some cases, even risky) is that you don’t get to choose who you’re chatting with; Chat Roulette does that for you at random.

chatroulette

Chat Roulette is a Flash-based application, so you don’t need to install special software other than plugins required by your browser. Once there, you can start chatting with random strangers. It can be a wild place to be, so be prepared to click “Next” when you don’t like the stranger you’re talking to, or if something you don’t like takes place on the webcam feed.

The site can be very addictive and engaging, especially if you strike some meaningful and entertaining conversations between total strangers across the world. What makes it more intriguing is that the site launched at the end of the year 2009 by a 17-year-old Russian student.

With the speed and reliability of Globe Tattoo, you can try playing Chat Roulette over the weekend. Tell us what you think!

Blosics 2

For the past few weeks, I’ve been showing you some fun stuff to do online. Dunno if you guys are getting tired of hearing about these free online flash games, but hey, here’s one more. This one is actually pretty fun, and it’ll make you think, too!

While I was scouring the web for new things to show you guys, I stumbled upon this quite accidentally. I went to my favorite feed aggregation site and saw some people were competing to get the highest score for this game. It’s called Blosics 2! I actually haven’t even tried Blosics 1, but hey, the sequel is pretty cool.

blostic

Wrap your minds around this – it’s a physics based puzzle game. There are 30 levels all in all. And each level has a different challenge. You shoot steel balls with different point costs into some bricks. The goal is to knock green blocks off the platforms, while keeping as many red blocks as possible.

Once you reach 100 points, you can move on to the next level. To make the challenge more interesting, there are some surfaces that are slippery and others are elastic, so the way you play each level is not really the same. Each level will require a different level of thinking and skill. The good thing about it is that it isn’t as boring as regular puzzle games because you have to take the physics into consideration – the velocity of the ball, the angle of the walls, the weight of the bricks and the balls, etc. etc.

There are tons of interesting stuff online, and this is something you can easily play when you’re bored and on the go. Go hook up your Globe Tattoo broadband stick and check it out!

Pinoy HangARoo

HangARoo was one of the most addictive Flash games a few years ago. It was a simple game of Hangman where you had to save the life of a kangaroo throwing insults at you. The game, though, was made for an American audience; some of us were not familiar with some categories in HangARoo, like TV shows and US national heroes.

Thanks to Macuha.com, there’s now a HangARoo game exclusively for the Filipino audience. Pinoy HangARoo is an all-Filipino adaptation of the online Flash game that we all know and love. Instead of the foreign clues and answers available in the traditional HangARoo, Pinoy HangARoo now has a set of answers based on Pinoy culture, events, showbiz, places, and sports.

hangaroo

The same rules still apply for Pinoy HangARoo. You need to clear 10 levels, where you guess a word included in one of many categories. You can take a chance at clearing the level by guessing letters, although you’re only allowed four mistakes for every level. Once you cleared all 10 levels, you have saved the kangaroo, and you win the game. If you fail, though, the kangaroo falls through the gallows, and you lose the game. And not surprisingly, watching the Kangaroo hang feels oddly satisfying.

With Pinoy HangARoo, you can have a cool retro experience, while learning a lot more about Filipino culture and trivia. Grab a Globe Tattoo stick and you can play the game on go!

Media cards and flash drives don’t make good throwing knives and swords, but not in the wonderful and creative world of the Internet. Verbatim Media Monsters, the latest craze to go viral on the social networks today, brings out the inner fighter in every geek.

Verbatim Corporation, a company that specializes in computer storage media, brings us “,” an online Flash-based fighting game where you take control of a “media monster” made from Flash drives, CDs, external hard drives, and memory cards. For every fight you win, you gain bonuses and points for speed, vitality, power, and defense.

verbatim1

Verbatim Championship plays like other “automatic” fighting games (say, MyBrute, or even insect fighting), but you do have a level of control with your Media Monster. You can regain health, unleash a powerful melee move, or use a potentially damaging projectile attack. Once you gain enough experience points, you can challenge the five most powerful monsters in the game.

Verbatim Championship is rendered in Flash and 3D (very similar to Toribash), which something that your Globe Tattoo connection can definitely handle very well. You can also challenge your friends’ Media Monsters. You can even take snapshots of cool fight scene stills from your previous fights. You can even link replays on your blog.

If you’re a big fan of online fighting games, you’ll definitely like Verbatim Championship. Flash disks may not be the first thing that will come to mind when someone says “fighting game,” but in Verbatim Championship, you can have hours of monster-mashing fun.

Monkey Business With Gorilla.BAS Online

2010

Back in the days where there were no powerful computers or flashy gaming consoles, almost every computer user owned machines run by MS-DOS commands. There wasn’t much you could do with a PC running MS-DOS 6.22, and not all computers were able to run the more sophisticated games of the time. Computers then were workstations, but there were simple yet engaging games that already came bundled with DOS installs.

Enter Gorilla.bas – simple DOS-based two-player turn-based artillery game that used to run on QBasic. Each player (or a player and the CPU) took control of two gorillas perched above a cityscape, with buildings of different heights. The objective of the game is to throw exploding bananas at the opposing gorilla by measuring the angle and velocity of the throw. How epic is that? Two gorillas throwing exploding bananas at each other? Wrap your mind around that!

Gorilla.BAS wasn’t flashy, but it sure was addictive. It brings back memories of elementary school, where kids would enter random numbers and combinations to make sure that the pixelated exploding banana hits the pixelated gorilla on target. A simple animated dancing gorilla is a source of small laughs, especially after you figure out the right speed and angle.

gorilla

The good news is that you don’t need to look for a low-spec computer which runs MS-DOS to run Gorillas. Most emulations of Gorilla.BAS are done in Flash:

Gorilla.BAS at Kongregate.com
Jorillas: Gorilla.BAS in JAVA
Gorilla II: The Return has more options and enhanced graphics that build upon the classic franchise
Gorillas for your iPhone

Use your most awesome Globe Tattoo broadband stick to play Gorilla.bas ANYWHERE!
