Android Awesomeness

Technology, as most of us know, moves at blistering speed. Phones are coming out of the woodwork, and as soon as one leaves the production line, still warm from the embrace of the assembly plant, a new one is announced with even better specs and more advanced interface. It’s quite honestly hard to keep up.

The development for Android phones was started by Google, after they acquired a company called Android, Inc. in 2005. In 2007, the Open Handset Alliance announced the birth of the Android platform, an open-source platform for mobile phones, which run on the Linux kernel. Okay, that went way over my head, too. Basically, they’re phones that anyone who knows how to use Java can develop for.

The best thing about Android phones is that while their hardware is what you really pay for, the software is upgradeable and extremely customizable. It also supports a lot of existing platforms and technologies, with expansion and future-proofing in mind.

It has all sorts of media support, connectivity, messaging systems, development support and even input support, but what really sells the phone for me is its focus on mobile web surfing. That is what Globe Tattoo is all about, really – the convergence of mobile and the Internet.

Quite by coincidence, one of the better Android phones is the HTC Tattoo. It still isn’t shipping locally, though, as far as I know.
